The thyroid and obesity

The results of a study prosecuted on the University of Santiago de Compostela (located on the northwest of Spain) in collaboration with health professionals of the University of Cambridge, representing a breakthrough in the field of regulation of body weight and obesity.
A team of Spanish researchers has discovered how the thyroid hormones act on the brain, which could be helpful to find a treatment of weight control.
However, it demonstrates that it is possible to act at the hypothalamic level by pharmacological or genetic methods, and reverse the harmful effects of hyperthyroidism on body weight and induce weight loss; this information was published by the research group of Biomedical Research Center in Red Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn).
CIBERobn researchers have shown that these hormones modulate lipid metabolism (from fats) in the hypothalamus and as a result of this effect is stimulated nerve activity innervating brown adipose tissue, which increases the expression of genes involved in production body heat.
Although traditionally believed that human brown adipose tissue was significant only in infants, data obtained in the last year has shown its relevance in the modulation of body mass in adults, according CIBERobn.
Patients with high levels of thyroid hormones, a condition known as hyperthyroidism, characterized by manifesting slenderness, despite having a high intake as a result of high energy expenditure.
